History of Rap (and Hip Hop culture)

The original idea to write this blog text came after reading this interview,
with the Finnish popular rapper "Paleface":

Paleface was asked:
"what was the first rap song?"
And he answered: "It was born in America,
When they started bringing slaves there from Africa-the roots of black music are actually in Africa"
I found the answer unsatisfying, so I had to write my own version.
Let us be clear that I will talk about "Rap" as we know it today.
This text is not about Karelian poem singing or any
other form of verbally performed poetry tradition.
This text is about Rap and how it is a part of Hip Hop culture today and where it came from.
The form of Musical entertainment with spoken rhymes originating from late 1970´s New York City.
I doubt African slaves were "rapping" as such in the slave ships, Im quite sure they were singing, though
and the tradition of the griots was most certainly transferred to America with the slaves.
That is still not exactly what we know as "Rap" today.
Jamaica plays a crucial role in all this.
One of the first, if not the first Hip Hop DJ was DJ Kool Herc
in the 1970´s in Bronx, New York. He was originally of Jamaican origin.
He was one of the first DJ playing the breaks, and then the dancers would break dance.
DJ can mean two different things.
In Jamaican music tradition the role of the DJ (Disc Jockey) was pretty much what we call
MC (master of ceremonies) in Rap music today.
That is, to talk rhythmically ("Toasting") on top of a musical backing. Following the rhythm of the music, chanting and rhyming, enhancing the performance, thus creating a whole new piece.
This style of rhythmically speaking to music was introduced as early as the 1950´s by Count Matchuki.
The first Jamaican DJ, who took his influences from the "jive talking" of american radio deejays.
Jamaican DJ´s had their voices recorded on vinyl as early as the 60´s, and by 70´s it was a very popular
style. Some of the original Jamaican toasting DJ´s are U-Roy, Dennis Alcapone, I-Roy and Dillinger.
To Consider them as forefathers of Rap as we know it is not very far fetched.
To Call any of their recorded output "the first rap song" still would not be correct in my opinion.
"Jive talk" was a way of speaking in Harlem, New York around late 1930´s. Jive talking has its roots in the afro-american peoples way of communicating among themselves, and became very popular thru jazz music. Some elements of Rap today can certainly be traced back to this way of speaking the "street" language..
Various type of people spoke this type of slang originally including, but not limited to:
pimps, con men, gamblers, drug dealers, thieves, prostitutes and musicians.
They all added the vocabulary of their given trade to the spoken language.
Making up totally new terms and inventing fresh ways to use old words and sayings, cleverly changing
and rearranging them to a new rap language, not understood by "The Man".
"Pimp talk" and way of life can still be seen as an influence in the bling bling of many rappers.
The Jewelry, the "Grills", The Pimpmobiles and the objectification and sexualization of women in rap videos.
The Calling of women as "Ho´s" and Bitches in rap lyrics is clearly a pimp originated thing.
NWA (Niggaz wit attitudez) was notorious for their dirty language and songs such as "Findum, Fuckum & Flee", "I'd Rather Fuck You" and "One Less Bitch". They were a huge hit and spawned a whole sub-genre of rap music and a formula which has proven to be very successful.
One example of this Pimp culture imagery surviving in newer rap culture is Pimp C (RIP).
Modern Hit Songs like 50 Cent´s P.I.M.P. should prove the pimp connection.
Snoop Dogg is basically nothing but a pimp as well.
The most respected member of his poor Ghetto, because he has the fur coat, the stretch limo and diamond studded pimp cup. Not to mention all the stunning half-naked women crawling at his feet, fulfilling his orders.
All this can be seen as a direct continuation of the "traditional" Pimp game. If this is a positive role model for young males today, is another question and outside the scope of this text.
The well respected Rap Artist "Too Short" is all about pimping. "The 2 Live Crew" had a huge hit
globally with "Me So Horny" and their whole act was based on obscenity and sexism. Their Label boss Luke Skyywalker is basically a "Pimp". At least image-wise.

The Pimp talk of Iceberg Slim was definitely an influence on gangsta rappers as admitted by Ice-T.
Iceberg Slim even recorded a spoken word album, in1976 but the musical backing is straight up jazz, and not funky and rhythmical enough to be called the first Rap LP in my opinion.
The books he wrote are recommended reading especially for their colorful language.
The Dolemite Character of Rudy Ray Moore´s 1970´s movies was a straight up pimp talking rapper.
"Dolemite is my name and rappin and tappin is my game".
Dolemite likes his music funky as well but I still can not name him as the first rapper in the modern
sense of the word, even though he did rap, as you can hear here:
Rudy Ray Moore released a string of succesful X-rated comedy records in the 1970´s.
The nasty n-words and cursing of modern gangsta rappers originates from the below-the-belt
punchlines of these kind of entertainers who in turn were influenced by real-life pimps of the past who originated this kind of hypnotic rhyme style to control and manipulate their stable of drugged-out bitches and amaze the crowds of eager listeners on street corners and to captivate the imaginations of lame squares they were going to rip off..
Another X-rated comedian and song writer was Blowfly
Real name Clarence Reid, he wrote hit songs for KC and the sunshine band and others.
On the side, he hustled his catalogue of porn songs, usually dirty joke versions of the days hits.
Sittin´ on the dock of the bay, became Shitting on the dock of the bay in Blowflys hands.
He did write and release plenty of original material as well.
He is included here because as "Blowfly" he released many rap records.
Already on the "Zodiac" album (1975), he rhymes:
"Chinese chicks, you like to suck big dicks!
All you Indian ho´s, you have an ass full of soul!
and all you cracker girls, the biggest freaks in the world!
Hey there you nigger females, oh how your pussy smells!
And all you jew bitches , your pussy´s so big you need a million stitches!"
and so on...
At this point in history this is still more a vaudeville / burlesque act, even though its very funky,
Its still Not "modern" hip hop as we know it.
BUT later on in his career Blowfly did this:

More dirty Blowfly Rap electro-hip-hop - style. Check out this track, as he is making fun of "Afrika Bambaataa", and the rest of them, hitting it right on target.
( I always used to think of this as just another "joke" song, with no deeper meaning, but
in light of the semi-recent rumors and accusations against Afrika Bambaataa about being into young males
and such, it makes one wonder if there is a deeper message here? )
Blowfly - Electronic Pussy sucker 1984
Blowfly is a rap pioneer.
He did do rap , whether tongue-in-cheek or not.
His music is very "funky", he raps rhymes, he is using "gangsta" vocabulary.
He must be considered as one potential first rapper to make a rap song ever, in my opinion.
Other Artists of the late sixties and early seventies did rap as well. Here is a few examples.
Not all of them always rapped about sexual themes.
There was also a more serious tone of voice to be heard, when it came to "rapping".
James Brown - Say It Loud Im Black And Im Proud 1969
In this famous track James Browns spoken word "rap" vocals represent another style in comparison to the materialistic bragging of the "pimps". Instead focusing on demanding human rights and being
proud of being black "instead of living on our knees". He sings on the track as well so it is not the
first all "rap" song in that sense.

He actually mentions "Rappin", So the godfather of Soul definitely should be on the list
of suspects as the first ever rapper to make a rap song.

Note in the vocals, he says "Rapping a little".
Here we must consider the word "Rap", it actually means "to talk" in "jive", so thats where the name of
the popular music style comes from. Rap means talking.
He influenced Hip-Hop Culture a lot.
His recordings have been sampled to death and used as recycled background music for countless raps.
Some of his songs are Breakdance classics.
In 1988 he released the comeback track "Im Real", offended by the illegal use of his music in rap hits,
such as Eric B and Rakim´s I know you got soul from the Paid In Full LP.

Snatch and the Poontangs - Signifying Monkey 1969
Another example of the "Pimp Rap" style. With x-rated Dirty rhymes.
Johnny Otis and his son Shuggie are behind this pseudonym, "snatch" and "poontang", respectively, being slang terms for female genitalia.
The musical backing here is straight blues, so it does not count as the 1st rap song in my opinion.
The Signifying monkey character is worth looking into to find out about the african roots of all this.
Ok, so Rap is an african (american) way of speaking and that´s it?
Stop, not so fast. We must take into account the language itself, english.English language is used as the basis for "rapping" and has a long tradition of poetry and rhyming.
Talking about Rap , we are dealing with a certain type of language based on UK english, but with
an american twist, a type of slang of the modern american multi-cultural underworld.
In my opinion, The English people could never have come up with Rap music on their own,
the language needed to go to USA first.
Best UK Rap groups such as Hijack sound so great not because of their proper english, but
rather because they have understood and adopted the original afro-american form so well.
They represent "real" Hip-Hop.
So, "What was the first rap song?"
I Can only give you a few examples because I was not there then and can not say for sure.
The first rap records seem to be from around 1979 or 78.
Some sources mention Fatback band - King Tim III from 1979 as the first rap release,
Others claim Kurtis Blow - Christmas rapping also from 1979 was the first rap record.
This does not mean they were the first rap songs ever performed anywhere.
Originally Rap happened in parties and clubs "live".
Some of these early live rap tapes have recently surfaced on bootlegs.

very interesting that the official release year is 1980, but the sleeve says Rap Classic 1978.
If this is true then this is the first Rap record. Why would they write1978 in 1980?
To be old school? Maybe it was recorded in 1978 and only released later? Hard to say.
On the subject of early female rappers You should know Millie Jackson and her track The Rap
from as early as 1974. Millie Jackson was famous for her double-entendres and "risque" lyrics.
Another funky track as an example of her spoken lyrical style:

Talking about old school soul rapping , Pigmeat Markham did "Here Comes The Judge" in 1968, while
Isaac Hayes dropped Ike´s Rap I in 1970.
Joe Tex released an LP of Funky soul music in 1972 called From the roots came the rapper, even though the music featured on the LP is not "rap" per se.
Sugar Hill Gang - Rappers delight with its stolen lyrics was the first Global Rap mega hit.

It influenced many to put out a rap record with a similar feel, some were more original than others..
Scoopy - Scoopy Rap, Spoonin Gee - Spoonin Rap, Willie Wood & Willie Wood Crew - Willie Rap and Family - Family Rap all came out in 1979 on Peter Brown´s "Sound Of New York" -label.
Also 1979 is The Younger Generation - We Rap More Mellow with The Furious Five rapping.
Troy Rainey - Tricky Tee Rap, Doctor love and sister love - Doctor love and sister love rap, both 1979 were released on the Heavenly Star- label.
So it seems 1979 was the year the record labels first started putting out rap records.
I must mention Gil Scott-Heron Revolution will not be televised, the conscious, political, angry spoken word track from 1971,that clearly influenced the likes of Public Enemy.
Public Enemy was a representative of the more conscious, political style of Rapping,
With titles like "Fear of a black planet" & "Fight the power", which were very big hits.
Maybe a bit surprisingly for many old fans, used to the militant/conscious style of the band,
Flavor Flav of Public Enemy was later given his own TV program, acting the "pimp" role.
Professor Griff represents the more Political side of Public Enemy. He was ousted from the group amidst
anti-semitic accusations, and was given a solo career option by Chuck D, helping Griff to release his own LP on the Luke Skyywalker-label (of "2 Live crew" -fame). Griff himself was baffled, as he did not consider himself as a "rapper" as such, rather "minister of information", and of course the head of the "S1W´s", the uzi-toting "dancing troupe"of PE.
He continues to lecture and make you tube videos. He can not leave USA and will not be given a
passport. His house was burned down destroying his library and computer files, and his car was shot at while he was writing this book:
The Last Poets 1970 LP on the "Douglas"- label should be mentioned here as well.
The Last Poets represent a more spiritual and conscious way of "Rapping" enlightening words of wisdom.
Another album release more in the pimp rap tradition is the classic 1973 LP
Hustlers Convention by "Lightnin´ Rod" of the Last Poets who also did the pimp rap track "Dorialla Fontaine" with Jimi Hendrix (released in 1984 by Celluloid/Douglas)

This is a collaboration of Bill Carson of USA and Kojo Of Finland.
Billy Carson is an afro-american drummer who lived in Finland and played with
Jukka Tolonen and many other Finnish Musicians in the 70´s and 80´s.
He acted on TV as well, as a comedian. He finally left Finland allegedly,
because he got tired of the racism.

SOFIA ROTARU
Sofija Mihailovna Evdokimenko-Rotaru was born to a Moldavian family in Ukraine
in 1947. She sings in Russian , Romanian and Ukrainian languages.
She is a very famous celebrity in Ukraine and Russia even today.
She released many albums during the Soviet Union -times most of them eponymous.
To make things more confusing, most of them had several pressing runs ,with several
different front cover designs (see above). This makes it hard to tell one album from another.
You have to look at the song titles and the catalogue numbers to find out which is which.
The Cool part is that some (but not all) of her records have some really funky parts in them.
Most of the funkier tracks in her repertoire were recorded with "Chervona Ruta" ensemble.
In this segment from the Soviet-Ukrainian film "Pisnia zavzhdy z namy (1975)" we can hear an interpolation of TheTemptations´ "Papa was a rolling stone", towards the end it transforms into "Money runner" by Quincy Jones. Now we must understand that everything from USA was in essence banned at this time period in Soviet union. To include these American funk bits into the song was a bold move from the band. I doubt the Soviet censors realized what was going on right under their noses. Just to get a hold of the original American records must have been a hassle,
let alone playing the music and getting it recorded without the censors noticing. There are several examples of this kind of hidden USA-Funk-bits on other soviet-era records as well, i will write more on these later on in the blog. Stay tuned.
In the film she also does the song "Speak softly, Love" from the movie Godfather.
According to Wikipedia she was stopped from recording an english-language version of the song for Ariola-label by the Soviet authorities, when she was touring Germany in the 70´s.
From this example we can understand the limits of artistic freedom under Communist rule.

Back in the days before discogs, we arranged a trade with " jazzman gerald"
I had actually been warned not to deal with him? But
Stupid that i was i did not believe these warnings.
I happened to find a box full of a 7" single called:
Darkness of evil - laid back funk.
Jazzman gerald was selling these for 50 GBP
at the time, which was a rip off of course.
I asked him by email if he wanted to get more,
and how many?
He said he wants.i told him the records i want from him.
he had to value them 7 inchers at least 30% of what hes selling
Them for in Trade. So. I selected some rare funk 7 inchers from his list.
Then i made the mistake :
I sent him 10 copies of:
Conviniently jazzman gerald was coming to Finland to dj at a club.
So i arranged to meet him there. He would bring my records with him.
He had made similar artangements with other people as well.
I go to the club, go to him and he says he forgot to bring my trades.
I was shocked and left the club.
Later i asked him to ship my stuff.
He said he would do it ASAP.
WEEKS PASSED. NOTHING.
He never sent me any of the records agreed upon the trade.
When i asked for my records he arrogantly said "they must have been lost in the mail.
It happens you know"
He never offered an apology nor any kind of compensation.
There was not much to do.
I am warning everybody not to deal with these people.
They are not worthy of your trust.
I call them a cheating liar and suggest you dont buy a thing from them.

The Storyline:
2nd World War.
Leila is a beautiful Laplander village girl who saves crash-landing nazi pilot Hans.
Leila hides Hans and helps him escape.
Fast forward to swinging 1969. Hans is back in Lapland working as a photographer.
Hans and Leila hook-up again and Hans lures Leila to sinful Helsinki to work as a
Pin-up photomodel. Hans is a swinger who arranges pot and booze-fueled houseparties
where anything goes. Finally Leila gets enough of it and leaves two-timing Hans.
She now shares an apartment with a prostitute who works at home.
Leila tries different jobs but is sexually harassed at every one of them.
Finally, she ends up working at a shipyard and finds true love.
They go on a summer holiday together.
Life is Good.
Things get a twist for the worse, when Aslak, Leilas reindeer ball-busting dad finds out
about the nude photos taken by Hans, seeing a pin-up calendar on the wall of the local shop.
He freaks out because she has put the family name to shame,
drinks a bottle of Koskenkorva (Finnish booze) in one sip and leaves for Helsinki to get
revenge on Hans (and Leila).
Leila has lied to her father about the situation in Helsinki, claiming to be still in love with Hans and that they are getting married.
When Aslak comes to Helsinki Leila and Hans arrange a fake wedding to calm him down.
Hans explains the nude photos off as a "montage", using only the head of Leila with another womans body. Aslak buys this explanation and calms down.
Now follows the most disturbing scene in the movie (there are many).
Aslak wants to spend the night before the wedding sleeping in the same bed with his daughter(!).
Aslak and Leila go to a bedroom and before locking the door Aslak gives Hans a knowing wink.
This scene is just BAD, even for the "free love" 60´s. a true WTF moment.
The fake wedding ends in chaos as Leilas true love crashes the party and fights Hans.
Aslak finds out the truth and slaps Leila across the face, disowning her.
Everybody hates Leila now.
She goes to a bridge to commit suicide by jumping.
She is saved at the last minute by an evil pimp, who takes her abroad to work as a sex-slave.
Jouni, Leilas first love from the village comes to the rescue, informing Leila that Aslak has died and left her a huge heritage of reindeers and land.
"you are a very rich woman now".
They go back to Lapland where they belong, to live in harmony with nature.
Analysis:
Sensuela is full of nudity, bad acting and general cheesiness.
Somehow it still manages to entertain. As a Finnish movie it is one of a kind.
The colors are just amazing. Neon lights and lipstick shine brightly.
The reds almost burst out of the screen.
Some sequences, for example the part when Leila is looking for work in
various restaurants and pubs is well paced and tragicomical.
One of the worst things about the film in my opinion is the music.
With a film so desperately trying to be "hip" in a 1960´s way, why use classical
music for most of the film? It fits the melodrama, but I cant help thinking a funky
soundtrack could have saved this film from falling into obscurity.
Only in recent years has it found any kind of popularity.
The Director Teuvo Tulio (real name Theodor Thugai) is a seasoned pro by this time
and this flop is his swan song, as he did not make another movie after this.
The Latvian director made a lot of movies in Finland before Sensuela,
and many of them are respected classics of Finnish cinema.
Aki Kaurismäki names Teuvo Tulio as one of his favourites.
Maybe not because of this particular film, but then again the locations, harbours and
bars could easily be from any of Kaurismäki´s films.
Movies like this were not really made in Finland ,even back in the 70´s.
Only Visa Mäkinen (Pi pi pil... pilleri 1982) gets close.
One could argue that some Spede Pasanen films share the same aesthetics but i
must disagree. Even if Spede regularly used models and beauty queens in his films,
he never crossed the line to showing anything too risque, maybe out of fear of losing
underaged audiences, his films are in essence childrens movies anyway.
Sensuela is a sexploitation film, clearly aimed at a more mature audience,
and as such remains alone in that category of 1960's Finnish movies.
The film is "bad" without a question, it has its moments of genius though.
The film is not recommended for children or those easily offended.

It was recorded Full Analog on 24 track tape in Master Recording Studio, Pitäjänmäki,
Helsinki, by The legendary Suikki Jääskä.
The LP features Guitar, Bass, Drums and percussion, Rhodes & a Full Horn Section.
The Music is uptempo DJ-friendly Funk/Disco/Afrobeat.
All compositions are originals by the band, with influences from Fela, JB´s, Mandrill,
Kool and The Gang, Manu Dibango, Meters, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Funkadelic...
It Will Be released on all formats soon.

I SAW THE MOVIE AT "KAVA" MOVIE THEATRE IN HELSINKI AND IT WAS
VERY GOOD. IT HAD THE WEIRDEST ALIENS EVER WHO WERE SKIING VERY FAST.
THE DANCE SCENE ABOVE WAS THE MUSICAL HIGHLIGHT OF THE FILM.
AS FAR AS I KNOW THE TRACK IS ONLY AVAILABLE ON THIS 3-CD COMPILATION
WHICH WAS RELEASED IN 2001,
THE BOX-SET ALSO INCLUDES SOME 80´S ,90´S AND 2000 TRACKS BY HIM.
